PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Gout is most often diagnosed and managed in the primary care setting, with referral to specialty care as required. Hyperuricemia underlies gout and has been linked to a host of potentially serious sequelae. However, despite a number of recent advances in gout management, many patients still do not achieve adequate control of serum uric acid levels. In addition, discordance between evidence-based guidelines from major medical organizations regarding the optimal treatment of gout has led to confusion and controversy. To help bridge persistent practice gaps, this educational activity will feature an in-depth discussion of the potential effects of uncontrolled hyperuricemia. Strategies for managing hyperuricemia beyond acute gout attacks will be described. Available and emerging urate-lowering therapy will be discussed in detail. The faculty will review the importance of educating patients with gout about the potential effects of hyperuricemia and the importance of long-term adherence to help mitigate these effects.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:Describe the complications associated with uncontrolled hyperuricemiaReview markers for quality care in patients with goutDiscuss available and emerging options for urate-lowering therapyImplement effective treatment in patients with hyperuricemia
