PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The presentation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not specific and the differential diagnosis can therefore encompass a wide spectrum of distinct gastrointestinal disorders that can mimic and/or even coexist with IBD, which may result in delayed diagnosis and persistence of ongoing symptoms. In this activity, Dr. Gary R. Lichtenstein discusses the 2 principal manifestations of IBD—ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD)—in the context of a patient case of a young woman with UC. The activity outlines the different pathophysiologic processes and symptoms that differentiate IBD and from functional bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, and it reviews the American Gastroenterological Association’s CD and UC “Clinical Care Pathways.”
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:Recognize the early manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to ensure timely diagnosis and treatmentPromptly refer patients to gastroenterology specialists and/or IBD centers while continuing to manage their overall health
